Helmut Newton's iconic Self-portrait with a model and his wife is one of the famous artworks by the German-born photographer. An auction of this and other special photographs takes place in May, 2012.
London/New York (mea) A Modern Photography auction will include famous photographs by artists like Helmut Newton, David Lachapelle and Irving Penn. These iconic images have shaped fashion portraiture and inspired countless photographers around the world.
Among the top artworks is Newton's famous 'Self-Portrait with Wife and Models' from 1980, as well as his stunning '10th Floor Hilton, Paris' photograph from 1976.
The German-born Helmut Newton died in a car accident in Los Angeles in 2004 at the age of 84. Today, his photographs are some of the most valued - and the most valuable.
Elsewhere in the auction there are photographs of Naomi Campbell shot by David Lachapelle and Peter Lindbergh, and legendary snapper Burt Glinn.
'This is an opportunity to acquire some of the most important works of the history of photography, with works by 19th century masters, and a strong focus on post-war and fashion photography, led by the work of Irving Penn, Helmut Newton and Peter Beard,' Christie's said of the sale. 'The incredible roll call of subjects captured includes Picasso, Greta Garbo, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, Marilyn Monroe, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Barack Obama.'
Christie's Photographs auction is to be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2012.
