Exhibition 'Epic of the Persian Kings' opens at Cambridge University

100 paintings from lavishly illustrated manuscripts

 

 

The Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge University is hosting the exhibition 'Epic of the Persian Kings: The Art of Ferdowsi's Shahnameh', featuring illustrations inspired by the Shahnameh (Grand Book).

The exhibit, which opened on September 11, 2010 presents a spectacular range of richly illustrated manuscripts and miniature paintings selected from public and private collections in Great Britain, and includes the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, the British Museum, the British Library and several others.

The exhibition 'Epic of the Persian Kings' brings together nearly 100 paintings from these lavishly illustrated manuscripts spanning 800 years in the most comprehensive exhibition on Shahnameh.

A diverse program of events, including lectures by international authorities on Shahnameh, creative workshops and concerts of Persian music, film and theatrical performances, will accompany the exhibition.

Presented in cooperation with Iran Heritage Foundation and other organizations, the exhibition will run until January 9, 2011.
