Andy Warhol has created this portrait of Mildred Scheel.

This medical doctor is the founder of the German Cancer Aid, the leading citizens' initiative in the fight against cancer. Without this wife of the former German president, there would have been such a great solidatiry. The remarkable lady inspired physicians, universities and above all responsible men and women to make their own contributions in the fight against cancer. The photo shows the chief business manager of German Cancer Aid, Gerd Nettekoven, with an impressive graphic work by Andy Warhol (detail).

EXHIBITONS AROUND THE WORLD ...

Friends,

Two years have passed since the Grand Opening of the 'Alexander Sculpture Garden' at the Museum of European Art in Clarence, New York.

Much has happened since then: we added several fine bronze sculptures, the flowers and bushes along the western side have grown well and the garden looks very attractive. It is truly a valuable and quite special addition to the Museum's collection of fine European art.

In the coming months we need to organize significant fundraising efforts to pay off some of the old debts of the Museum, and to raise working capital for future projects.

What is needed is this:

20 men and women who appreciate our engagement for art, who will help us by informing and inviting 3 or 4 of their friends and acquaintances to make a $ 300 tax-deductible donation for our Alexander Sculpture Garden.

The names of the donors will be listed in a dignified and tasteful way on one of 8 display walls (8 x 6 feet) on which will be displayed reliefs by accomplished European, American and Canadian artists.

The checks should be made payable to: Museum of European Art, and mailed to: John Zavrel, Director, Museum of European Art, 10545 Main St., Clarence, New York 14031 (USA)

Please let me know if you can support our work by becoming a member of our 'GROUP OF 20'. Your help in this effort would be much appreciated.

With warm regards,

B. John Zavrel

The 'Maids of Honour' (Las Meninas) by Diego Velázquez. Painted in 1656. This painting is considered one of the worlds greatest works of art; the secret is in creating something revealing in an everyday scene. The painter of "the air" reflects his own workday: in the mirror on the far wall is the reflection of the King and Queen, which is the theme of the painting he is working on, the Princess is looking at her parents, surrounded by her aids and the loyal family dog near by.
