New York (mea) The Sotheby's is set to put modern and contemporary Indian paintings and miniatures up for sale during its fall auction in New York.
A selection of miniatures from the collection of Ananda K. Coomaraswamy and a number of exquisite modern Pakistani works will go under hammer from September 17, 2009.
The miniatures due for sale will include six of the Coomaraswamy collection, such as the 18th-century 'An Illustration to a Jataka Series: The Sixth Dream of King Pasenadi', which is a pictorial depiction of an ancient Jataka tale.
Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy was a Sri Lankan philosopher, historian and philosopher of Indian art, known as an early interpreter of Indian culture in the West.
Other highlights will be the well-known work 'And Behind Me Desolation' by Tyeb Mehta, who died a few months ago. The work is estimated to fetch $ 250,000 to 350,000. Known as one of the best Indian modernist painters and described by The New York Times as "the leading light of India's first post-colonial generation of Modernists," Tyeb Mehta was mostly inspired by the Partition of India.
